The Guardian The Taskforce Series Book 2 edition by Marliss Melton Romance eBooks

Special Agent Jackson Maddox is undercover at a reintegration program for ex-cons called Gateway. All the parolee's at Gateway had to convert to Islam and change their names to an Islamic names. It claims to have a high success rate on the ex-cons going on to living a crime free life and getting good respectable jobs. The taskforce that Jackson works for has reason to believe that Gateway is training terrorists and funding terrorism activity overseas.

Lena Alexandra is a journalist for a crime magazine who sister was murdered by a police officer some 15 years before but due to the witness disappearing he got off on that crime but was arrested later for drug trafficking. He is now part of the Gateway program and she is there undercover herself to see if she can get him to confess to the murder.

Marliss at the beginning of the book in a foreward explains that there are racial and religious elements in the book that may make some uncomfortable. I applaud her for saying what she had to say and to also point out that even though these situations do exist in the real world that this book was a work of fiction.

Jackson through out all of his time serving his country and being part of the task force is still a man with conscience. That conscience was a very attractive trait, it's what I feel attracted Lana to him right off the bat even though they were both lying to the other about who they were. Lana in the beginning was on a sole mission to get the killer of her sister no matter the cost. As the story went along she finally got to see what its like being on the other side of a journalist exposing a story at the sake of a story and comes to see things in a different light.

This wasnt always an easy story to read but but it was none the less well written in my opinion and I loved the romance between Jackson and Lana.

The Guardian The Taskforce Series Book 2 edition by Marliss Melton Romance eBooks Reviews

This book was, by far, her worst book. The story wasn't interesting enough to hold my attention. The romance was nonexistent, and appeared more to be about a man just looking for a new mother for his teenaged daughter. The action was minimal and boring. And though I like the idea of interracial relationships novels, the cover is misleading (I don't know why that bothers me, it just does). I praise her other books, but this one was a dud.
Although I enjoyed the plot of this one the insta love just didn't work for me at all. They hardly spent anytime alone together and yet were in love within a day or two.

I'm not sure I'll stick with this series.
As a fan of Ms. Melton I looked forward to this new series. This book proved a bit unbelievable for me. The plot line is actually really good. A reporter goes undercover to get a confession from a former cop that he killed her teenaged sister. An undercover agent is investigating allegations of extremism in a rehab program run by and for Muslims. What made it unbelievable for me is that two main character have very limited interactions with eachother while maintaining their undercover personas. Once they figure out who the other really is, they spend an afternoon together, but not alone. Suddenly they are madly in love with eachother and want to spend the rest of their lives together! OK, I realize this is a romantic thriller, but in the previous book of this series the two main characters really spent some time and got into eachothers heads before falling in love. I guess I was left wanting more.
The other beef I have has nothing to do with Ms. Melton and everything to do with the cover art. The male lead is a light-skinned African American. I realize that mixed-raced individuals don't always inherit the dominant African genes, but the man on the cover just looks like a white man with a tan. I could never reconcile the character's physical description with the man depicted in the cover. Were they afraid that the American public would recoil from having a mixed race couple on the cover? I certainly wouldn't! And shame on anyone who would.
UPDATE Thank you to whoever it was that decided to change the cover art to better fit the characters.
